Biomass Incineration
Heartwood has played an integral role in the creation of the Anti-Biomass Incineration & Forest Protection Campaign. The campaign has united organizations and activists across the nation in a declaration of opposition to biomass incineration. Biomass is often touted as a “green” energy solution, but this plant-based alternative for energy production is a dangerous false solution that threatens to worsen rather than resolve the problems we face. Burning biomass is not a renewable energy. The incineration of trees and forest resources is currently, and projected to be, the largest source of biomass energy in the United States. The biomass industry claims that the incinerators will only burn waste wood, but tremendous piles of straight logs have been seen awaiting use at biomass incineration plants. The burning of forests for energy is not only short sighted, it is not “carbon neutral.” Burning biomass actually produces 50% more carbon dioxide than burning coal because it burns less efficiently.
