Reunion Links

HEARTWOOD is a regional network that protects forests and supports community activism in the eastern United States through education, advocacy, and citizen empowerment.

HEARTWOOD was founded in 1991, when concerned citizens from several midwestern states met and agreed to work together to protect the heartland hardwood forest.

This region was once blanketed with a majestic hardwood forest containing more than 70 species of hardwood trees. Unfortunately, much of this forest has been cleared and what remains is mostly isolated fragments of public land that nonetheless play a critical role in providing habitat for wildlife, purifying the air and water, moderating global climate change, and offering places of beauty and enjoyment. .

Today, our efforts remain rooted in the heart of the central hardwood region, with an emphasis on our “core states” of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri. Over time, Heartwood has branched out to serve areas of need throughout an 18-state region, giving special attention to the “at risk” national forests in Michigan, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Virginia.

Work Exchange

Work Exchange (details above) must be preapproved. to get an approval code.

Cooperative Work Model

Heartwood is a cooperative network, and we depend on the shared work of everyone to get things done, whether it’s in an organization, a campaign—or the kitchen. If you are planning to eat more than 2 Heartwood prepared meals during the weekend, we will need you to sign up to help with either the preparation, serving &/or cleanup of one of the meals during the weekend. (Persons leading workshops or other specific activities could substitute that time instead.) Additionally, you can receive a $1 per adult meal discount for signing up for a second 2-3-hour shift in the kitchen during weekend. Sign up for a co-op work discount now, by putting the number of persons working in the box but you will choose your specific work time (meal preparation, service, or clean up) when you sign in at the Reunion. Many hands make light work, and we depend on the hands of our Heartwood network. The best part? You'll likely learn something and have a great time doing it!

Information About Accommodations

Some years we get frost at the reunion but sometimes the temperatures don’t drop below the 50’s at night so everyone needs to be prepared to be comfortable. No matter where you sleep, you will want a reliable flashlight to find your way around at the Lazy Black Bear.

Most people who attend the reunion choose to camp in one of the fields, but there is a variety of rustic “indoor” accommodations including small open air cabins and trailers/vans available for reservation on a first come, first serve basis. Payment must be made at the time of the reservation to hold your reservation. Since the supply is limited, it should NOT be assumed that the cabins or vans would be available to those who don’t prearrange &/or pre-register. There are 7 cabins which hold 3 or 4 people each, 2 of which have double beds and the other 5 with single beds only; these are $5 per person for the night or $10 for the weekend. Additionally, there are 2 vans with double beds which cost $10 a night whether used by one or 2 people. Persons using these cabins/vans will need to provide their own bedding (sleeping bag &/or blankets) and should bring a sheet to cover the mattress before placing their sleeping bag on it. If you are not able to bring a sheet to cover the mattress, one will be provided since you do need to cover the mattress first. If you like to use a pillow, it is best to bring your own.

There is a limited capacity solar heated shower and multiple outhouses for both the cabin and campers. It is helpful if you bring some of your own water.

In addition to camping, there is some couch and floor space in the main barn. Persons using any of the inside accommodations or camping should be prepared to clean up after themselves after the event, but if one person in the cabin or the van wants to save $5.00 on their accommodations, they can be responsible for cleaning up their cabin at the start of the weekend. (This information would need to be included in your email or phone call about accommodations.) All persons can borrow a broom and dust cloth to clean their accommodations beyond the level provided.

Parking: Persons staying overnight should park in the field behind the barns and gardens; this is the area most convenient to the camping and cabins. Persons who are not staying over night should park along the roadway near the driveway coming into the Lazy Black Bear, this makes it easier for people to leave in the dark.
