HEARTWOOD is a regional network that protects forests and supports
community activism in the eastern United States through education, advocacy,
and citizen empowerment.
HEARTWOOD was founded in 1991, when concerned citizens from several
midwestern states met and agreed to work together to protect the heartland
hardwood forest.
This region was once blanketed with a majestic hardwood forest containing
more than 70 species of hardwood trees. Unfortunately, much of this forest has
been cleared and what remains is mostly isolated fragments of public land that
nonetheless play a critical role in providing habitat for wildlife, purifying
the air and water, moderating global climate change, and offering places of
beauty and enjoyment. .
Today, our efforts remain rooted in the heart of the central hardwood
region, with an emphasis on our “core states” of Indiana, Ohio,
Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri. Over time, Heartwood has branched out to
serve areas of need throughout an 18-state region, giving special attention to
the “at risk” national forests in Michigan, Mississippi,
Pennsylvania, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Virginia.
Heartwood Forest Council Registration
Work Exchange
If the registration cost is out of your budget at the moment, you can
request a work exchange assignment. You will work a 2.5-hour shift to
reduce your weekend rate by $18. (This is separate from the cooperative
kitchen help request below.) To receive the work exchange code, please
contact or (513) 541-6978.
Work Exchange (details above) must be preapproved. to get an approval code.
Cooperative Work Model
Heartwood is a cooperative network, and we depend on the shared work of
everyone to get things done, whether it’s in an organization, a
campaign—or the kitchen. To that end, you can receive a
$1
per adult meal discount for
signing up for a 2-3-hour
shift in the kitchen during the Forest Council. Sign up for a
co-op work discount now, and you can choose your specific work time
(meal preparation, service, or clean up) when you sign in at the Forest
Council. Many hands make light work, and we depend on the hands of our
Heartwood network. The best part? You'll likely learn something and
have a great time doing it!
Information About Accommodations
There are four cabins containing 14-16 bunks per cabin. There are 3
showers, 2 toilets, and 4 sinks per cabin. You need to bring your own
linens and towels. Because of the limited number of bunks in the
cabins, it is essential to pre-register for the Forest Council if you
want to guarantee a bunk in a cabin.
There will be plenty of space for tents, however!
